How it's calculated
Approx. liquidation (isolated): long = entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance-margin); short = entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance-margin). It excludes fees and funding, so your exchange's exact figure will differ slightly.
Worked example
A long opened at $100 at 10× leverage, with a 0.5% maintenance margin, liquidates near $100 × (1 − 1/10 + 0.005) = $90.50. Drop the leverage to 5× and the liquidation price falls to about $80.50 — lower leverage gives the trade more room before it's closed.
FAQ
- Is this my exact liquidation price?
- No — it's an approximation. Exchanges factor in trading fees, funding and their own maintenance-margin tiers, and they liquidate against the mark price, not the last traded price. Always confirm the exact figure in your trading platform.
- How do I push my liquidation price further away?
- Use lower leverage, add margin to the position, or trade on isolated margin so a single position can't drain your whole balance. Each gives the trade more room before liquidation.
